Dr. Jean Baptiste Nsengiyumva

Dr. Jean Baptiste Nsengiyumva is a Disaster and Natural Hazard Risk Manager with a PhD in Earth Observation and Geo-Information Sciences from the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS-China). His Doctoral dissertation was entitled’ Modeling Landslide Susceptibility in Central-Eastern Africa”, A case of Rwanda. Jean Baptiste also holds a Master of Science degree (MSc.) in Governance and Spatial Information Management from the University of Twente in the Netherlands ; a Bachelor Degree from the National University of Rwanda (Current UR) and a Post Graduate degree in Disaster Resilience Leadership from Makerere University in Uganda. He is interested in Socio-Economic Researches, Disaster Risk Analysis, Hazard Monitoring, Vulnerability Assessment. He joined IPAR in August 2019 as the Senior Research Fellow. Prior to joining IPAR, Jean Baptiste was the Director of Research and Public Awareness, Director of Risk Reduction and Preparedness, Director of Mitigation and Prevention in the Ministry in Charge of Emergency Management in Rwanda-MINEMA (From June 2011 to April 2019) and Member of the Board of Directors for Rwanda Meteorological Agency.
Jean Baptiste has worked for IGAD Climate Prediction and Applications Centre (ICPAC/SAWIDREA-Project, Nairobi-Kenya) as a Disaster Risk Management Expert. In addition, he occupied different positions such as : Director of GIS and Urban Housing Database in Rwanda Housing Authority, Principal Policy Planning and Researcher in the Rwanda Higher Education Council, Researcher in IRST (Current NIRDA) and a Lecturer in different Higher Learning Institutions (UR, UNILAK and INES). Additionally, he has published different high impact factor papers in international peer reviewed Journals (Elsevier, MDPI, Tylor & Francis and Wiley Publishers).
